TAXI / PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER BY DEFINITION:

They transport people to and from the places they need to go to for a metred or pre-determined fee. Taxi drivers are responsible for the safety of their passengers, and need to acquire a lot of experience driving in hazardous weather conditions like snow and heavy rain. Good taxi drivers are extremely familiar with the area they serve, and are able to transport their passengers to their destination as quickly as possible for the cheapest possible fare even during heavy traffic. Choosing the most efficient routes and getting the passengers to their destination quickly allows them to pick up more passengers and make more money.
Some taxi drivers own their own vehicles, and sign a contract with a taxi company that lets them use their facilities and dispatchers for a weekly depot rent and equipment hire. These drivers are able to keep all of their fares, but also have to pay all of the expenses needed to keep their vehicle operational.
Other drivers use taxis that are owned by the company they work for. These taxi drivers don't have as many costs but in most cases have to share their fares with the company they work for. A large number of companies also offer leasing options where the company buys the vehicle, the driver agrees to pay a weekly lease which may well include insurance and maintenance. At the end of an agreed term, the driver owns that vehicle.
This can be a stressful occupation at times, particularly when driving in heavy traffic or transporting violent, drunk or agitated passengers. It is important to understand that you need to be ‘thick skinned’ and often have the patience of a saint. There are many resources available from the council, the police and online with advice for dealing with such situations. While you may at some point in your career be called on to ‘defend yourself’, it cannot be stressed enough that striking a passenger is very likely to lose you your job and livelihood, but you are very likely to be prosecuted.
Taxi drivers often help their passengers load their luggage into and out of their vehicles. Since drivers spend so much time driving, they are potentially at a higher risk for being in a car accident. Paying close attention to the road and obeying traffic laws can help reduce the risk of accident as can effective time management (taking a break). The majority of taxi drivers work full time, but there are many part time opportunities available as well. The working schedules tend to be very flexible, but working on nights and weekends is often required to earn a decent living.

Additional responsibilities for taxi driver jobs include:

  • Performing routine maintenance on their vehicle, such as regular washing, adjusting tire pressure and adding oil.
  • Providing passengers with information about local attractions or other points of interest where necessary.
  • Using metres and fare cards to determine fares.
  • Picking up passengers and taking them where they want to go in a timely and professional manner
  • Where possible, particularly with private hire vehicles, get out of the car to greet your passenger and assist them as needs be.
  • If luggage they are transporting is too heavy, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Injuries can have long term impact on your earning potential.
  • Be smart, passengers always remember a well presented and courteous driver. Avoid trainers and overly fashionable and/or ripped jeans. Ideally wear a shirt but where a t-shirt is preferred, be mindful that large emblems or logos will often undermine the level of service.
  • Remember your car is your ‘office’. Keep it clean at all times and yourself to match. The biggest downfall to a taxi drivers business anywhere in the world is hygiene
  • The company whose brand you represent is your best friend, treat the business they give you professionally and with respect and the rewards are often very good.
